By combining the LCD layer with the touch-screen layer, Apple can cram more power into a smaller package
Having trouble fitting your current iPhone in your pocket? Well, good news ? according to the latest iPhone 5 rumors from the Wall Street Journal, the next Apple iPhone will have a new screen significantly thinner than the current model.
The thinner iPhone owes its existence to new technology that allows Apple to combine the LCD layer of the phone with the touch-screen layer. Currently, the touch screen layer takes up about 0.5 millimeters of real estate of the 9.3-millimeter thick phone. The change will not only reduce the thickness of the phone, but will also make the display clearer.
The new, 4-inch wide iPhone 5 (or whatever its ultimately called) is expected to be released in the fall. American retailers have yet to begin taking pre-orders, though a number of sketchy Chinese companies have already begun offering iPhone 5 pre-orders at seemingly random prices.
