Scotland's Mountain Bike Explosion ? celticlifeintl.com

A beautiful and thrilling thirty-eight miles of Scotland?s West Highland Way is mountain biker Jim Shields? ultimate ride.

?Starting off from the very tip ofLoch Lomond, the route passes through gorges and rapids with dark peaty pools,? the seasoned mountain biker describes.

The course then proceeds by Robert the Bruce?s St. Fillan?s Chapel, crosses theBridgeofOrchy, where bikers can revel in 1,000-foot views, descends down to Rannoch Moor and ends at the 17th century Kings House Hotel.

?This day?s ride has everything you could ever want from mountain biking inScotland, with great climbs, amazing descents, fabulous scenery and the chance to chat to amazing people from all over the world,? shares Shields.

Scotland?s mountain biking scene has exploded over the last 10 years, and recreationalists, competitors, guides and trail centres are all along for the ride.

?The Scots have gone positively bonkers!? declared the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) upon awarding the nation the coveted Global Superstar title in 2005 and 2006. Increased trails and facilities and never-ending natural, cultural and historical experiences have transformed Scotland into one of the world?s top mountain biking destinations.

?It has evolved into a mainstream activity for many holiday makers,? says Sam Hill, owner of The Break Pad, a bike hire shop in Newton Stewart. ?It used to be very much men in their 30s, and now we see all sorts of people.?

Numerous centres have recently popped up across the country onScotland?s Forestry Commission lands, including Laggan Wolftrax in theHighlandsand 7Stanes in the south. The latter offers eight centres with 400 km of single-track trails and routes marked according to skill level. ?They are colour-graded from the green route for families with small children to the black route for serious mountain bikers,? explains Hill.

?The 7stanes trails should be on everyone?s list,? raves Peter Corson, owner of Trailbrakes Biking Holidays. ?They include some of the most flowing, fun single-tracks available anywhere on the planet.?

Scotland?s more rugged terrain is also open for exploration. ?Scotland has liberal views on access to the countryside, with equal access rights available to bikers on pretty much any trail where you can walk or ride a horse,? says Corson.

He?s referring to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (2005) which allows bikers free rein in many ofScotland?s far-flung landscapes as long as they ride responsibly.

?There are large areas of sparsely populated back country with mile upon mile of great scenery and fantastic trails, from easy going gravel roads with magnificent views, to action packed single-track that will have you hurtling down a mountainside,? Corson notes with a grin.

Mari Findlay, Development Manager ofthe7stanesMountainBiking Community Interest Company, says that local and international bikers have responded toScotland?s purpose-built facilities and open access laws. ?In 2007, the number of tourists who undertook mountain biking during a trip toScotlandnearly doubled from the previous year.?

Findlay adds, ?Mountain biking tourism generates ?46.5 million (US$74.4 million) each year for the Scottish economy plus there are an estimated 11.8 million people who own a mountain bike in the UK.?

What perhaps makesScotlandmost appealing for both rookie and professional bikers is the holistic experience. Many destinations have biker-friendly accommodations, caf?s and rental shops and even the option of hiring companies to transport your baggage. Opportunities for cultural and historical immersion also abound.

?Any cross-country biking route can be adapted to include detours to visit places, from ancient churches and castles to distilleries and ice-cream factories,? shares Corson.

John Fulton, pioneer of the renowned Coast-to-Coast mountain biking route, understands the importance of integrating recreation with history. ?One can ride on ancient trails used by the Highlanders over the centuries,? he muses. In July 2014, Fulton?s company, Wildcat Adventures, is planning a tour to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, which will coincide with the International Gathering of the Clans.

Scotland?s mountain bike scene has also reached international competition acclaim.FortWilliamhosts the downhill portion of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup annually. Plus, in preparation for the 2014 Commonwealth Games,Glasgowis building new, world-class XC facilities. ?We?re producing an ever-increasing number of very talented young riders,? says Catherine Shearer, Marketing Manager of H&I Adventures Mountain Biking Worldwide, about Scotland?s growing group of competitors.

Recreational mountain biking will also continue to grow, Shearer adds. ?Businesses are becoming more aware of the benefits of mountain biking tourism toScotland?s economy, so there?s a real commitment to growing the sport for the future.?

With more trails and centres being developed and upgraded, Scotland shows no sign of slowing down and nor does the influx of local and international mountain bikers.

So, where to begin your Scottish MTB adventure?

?Of course I?m going to recommend Kirroughtree where we are based,? says Hill, ?but you can really take a mountain bike safari here inScotlandfor a month. Head up toFortWilliamto sample the World Cup downhill course and the amazingly technical trails of Laggan Wolftrax; take a trek up to theIsle of Skyeand encounter a golden eagle? The opportunities to have a real Scottish experience are endless?.

Perhaps you might book H&I Adventures? leisurely Taste and Trails of Scotland tour or more challenging Torridon and Skye. You could complete the classic Coast-to-Coast with the trail?s pioneer, Wildcat Adventures, or an alternative Southern Upland Coast-to-Coast tour with Trailbrakes Biking Holidays.

But you don?t necessarily need a plan. Set out in the Highlands north, the Lowlands south, the Isle of Skye or any place in between and allow your body, spirit and wheels to freely roam. ~ By Michelle Brunet

Buying the Granny Smith game is the best buck you'll spend this week

Granny Smith

So imagine you're a sweet little granny, who wears roller skates and can use a cane like some sort of geriatric ninja. Add in a chubby little thief, who seems to have one goal in life -- to steal your apples. No, this isn't some bizarre M. Night Shyamalan film, it's a great new game from Mediocre. The same folks who brought us Sprinkle now have a new title, and I predict it will be an instant hit.

It's simple to play -- tap the right side to jump, and the left side to swing your cane and grab things overhead. You'll twist and turn through 36 levels where you get dirty with pigs, break through windows, and generally show some amazing parkour skills to get your apples before the thief does. It sounds simple to play because it is, and it sounds fun as hell because it is.

If you're rocking a Tegra 3 device, it's even better. Granny Smith is fully Tegra optimized, with extra "breakables", scenery, and particle physics. That's not to say it doesn't play well on other devices, but you get that little bit of extra oompf from the Tegra. Be honest, that little bit of extra oompf is why we bought Tegra devices to start with.

Anyhoo, the game is live in Google Play and only costs a buck. Stop thinking about it and go buy it. When your battery is dead, you can come back and thank me. Video trailer is after the break.

US performs worst on potentially preventable death rates compared to France, Germany, and UK

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? The United States lags three other industrialized nations -- France, Germany, and the United Kingdom -- in its potentially preventable death rate, and in the pace of improvement in preventing deaths that could have been avoided with timely and effective health care, according to a Commonwealth Fund-supported study published as a web first online today in Health Affairs. Between 1999 and 2006/2007, the overall potentially preventable death rate among men ages 0 to 74 dropped by only 18.5 percent in the United States, while the rate declined by nearly 37 percent in the U.K. For women, the rate fell by 17.5 percent in the U.S. but by nearly 32 percent in the U.K.

In "In Amenable Mortality -- Deaths Avoidable Through Health Care -- Progress In the US Lags That of Three European Countries," Ellen Nolte, Director of Health and Healthcare at RAND Europe and Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine analyzed amenable mortality trends. Amenable mortality is a measure of deaths before age 75 that could potentially have been prevented by timely access to appropriate health care. The research also looked at death rates for those under 65, as well as deaths between ages 65 and 74 from conditions like treatable cancer, diabetes, infections, and heart disease.

While the pace of improvement was slower in the U.S. for both age groups, the lag was most pronounced among American men and women under age 65, who are more likely to be uninsured and have problems with access to care than those 65 and older, who are eligible for Medicare. By comparison, France, Germany, and the U.K. all provide affordable, universal coverage to their populations regardless of age. "These findings strengthen the case for reforms that will enable all Americans to receive timely and effective health care" said Nolte, lead author of the study.

By 2007, the potentially preventable death rate among U.S. men under age 65 was 69 per 100,000, considerably higher than in the U.K. (53), Germany, (50) and France (37). Death rates for men in this age group have declined more rapidly in all three countries since 1999 than in the United States.

Among women under age 65, the potentially preventable death rate dropped from 64 to 56 per 100,000 in the U.S., from 61 to 46 per 100,000 in the U.K., from 49 to 40 per 100,000 in Germany, and from 42 to 34 per 100,000 in France. For both women and men under age 65, U.S. potentially preventable death rates were higher than the other three countries.

In contrast to the under-65 population, U.S. potentially preventable death rates compared relatively well for men and women ages 65-74, the age when people in the U.S. become eligible for Medicare. However, the U.S. rate of decline in this age group was slower than that in the U.K. and Germany.

"Despite spending about twice as much per person each year on health care as France, Germany or the U.K. -- $8,400 in 2010 -- the U.S. is increasingly falling behind these countries in terms of progress in lowering the potentially preventable death rate," said Commonwealth Fund President Karen Davis. "The good news is that the Affordable Care Act is already beginning to close the gaps in access to care. When fully implemented, it will cover nearly all Americans, with the potential to put our country on track to improve to levels seen in the best-performing countries."

GOP approves platform barring abortions, gay marriage

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republicans emphatically approved a toughly worded party platform at their national convention Tuesday that would ban all abortions and gay marriages, reshape Medicare into a voucher-like program and reject federal spending as an antidote for the nation's ailing job market.

The document opens by warning that while the American Dream has long been of equal opportunity for everyone, "Today that American Dream is at risk." It pledges that the GOP will "begin anew, with profound changes in the way government operates; the way it budgets, taxes and regulates."

Both parties routinely approve platforms at their conventions every four years, meant to encapsulate their principles and goals. Much of their details are customarily ignored when it comes to actually governing.

Even so, a poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found more people interested in the GOP platform than in the upcoming acceptance speeches by presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan. The survey found that 52 percent said they were interested in learning about the Republican platform, compared to 44 percent interested in Romney's speech and 46 percent interested in Ryan's.

Democrats lambasted the platform and immediately sought to tie it to Romney, who has differed from some of its details. For instance, he has said he would allow abortions in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is threatened.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is among several Democrats in Tampa trying to get their party's views heard, called the platform's stances on abortion and immigration "draconian" and "extreme" and blamed Romney. "What you have seen from him is that he does one thing, he says another," Villaraigosa said. "He has taken one position after another, time and again you know, and you can't have it both ways."

Here are key elements of the Republican platform:

JOB CREATION:

It states that the best jobs program is economic growth. "We do not offer yet another made-in-Washington package of subsidies and spending to create temporary or artificial jobs."

___

SMALL BUSINESS:

The GOP pledges to reform the tax code to make it easier for businesses to generate more capital and create more jobs.

___

TAXES:

"We reject the use of taxation to redistribute income, fund unnecessary or ineffective programs or foster the crony capitalism that corrupts both politicians and corporations."

It says a Republican administration would extend the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, pending reform of the tax code. It says the party would strive to eliminate taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains altogether for lower- and middle-income taxpayers. It also would work to repeal the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax.

The party backs constitutional amendments to balance the federal budget and require a super majority for any tax increases.

___

MARRIAGE:

The platform affirms the rights of states and the federal government not to recognize same-sex marriage. It backs a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

___

VOTER INTEGRITY:

"Voter fraud is a political poison," the platform says. It praises legislation to require photo identification for voting and to prevent election fraud.

___

GUN CONTROL:

The party says it opposes legislation intended to restrict Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the assault weapons ban passed during the Clinton presidency.

___

ABORTION:

The party states that "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." It opposes using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or to fund organizations that perform or advocate abortions. It says the party will not fund or subsidize health care that includes abortion coverage.

___

ENERGY:

The party is committed to domestic energy independence and an "all-of-the-above" energy policy, backing the exploration and development of the Outer Continental Shelf and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. It criticizes the Obama administration for picking winners and losers in the energy sector and expresses support for new coal-fired plants that will be low-cost, environmentally responsible and efficient.

It adds: "We will end the EPA's war on coal and encourage the increased safe development in all regions of the nation's coal resources." It calls on Congress to prohibit the EPA from moving forward with new greenhouse gas regulations "that will harm the nation's economy and threaten millions of jobs over the next quarter century."

____

MEDICARE and MEDICAID:

The platform pledges to move both Medicare and Medicaid away from "the current unsustainable defined-benefit entitlement model to a fiscally sound defined-contribution model." It supports a Medicare transition to a premium-support model with an income-adjusted contribution toward a health plan of the enrollee's choice. Age eligibility in Medicare must be made more realistic in light of longer life spans.

Medicaid services for low income people would be transformed into a block grant program in which the states would be given the flexibility to determine the best programs for their residents.

____

IMMIGRATION:

The platform makes clear that "we oppose any form of amnesty for those who, by intentionally violating the law, disadvantage those who have obeyed it." It demands that the Justice Department halt lawsuits against Arizona, Alabama and other states that have enacted tough measures against illegal immigrants. It says federal funding should be denied to universities that provide in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants. It advocates making English the official national language.

____

HEALTH CARE:

It states that a Republican president on his first day in office would use his waiver authority to halt progress in carrying out the health care act pushed through by President Barack Obama and that Republican victories in November would guarantee that the act is never implemented. It proposes a Republican plan based on improving health care quality and lowering costs and a system that promotes the free market and gives consumers more choice.

____

EDUCATION:

Republicans support consumer choice, including home schooling, local innovations such as single-sex classes, full-day school hours and year-round schools. It says Republicans renew their call for replacing family planning programs for teens "with abstinence education which teaches abstinence until marriage as the responsible and respected standard of behavior."

____

DEFENSE:

The platform says Republicans are "the party of peace through strength" and support the concept of American exceptionalism ? "the conviction that our country holds a unique place and role in human history." It criticizes the current administration for its weak positions toward such countries as North Korea, China and Iran and its reductions in military spending. The Republican national military strategy "restores as a principal objective the deterrence using the full spectrum of our military capabilities."

Automakers Concerned About Consumers Going Along With New Fuel Efficiency Standards

Past consumer behavior has the auto industry reacting with "mixed emotions" to today's Obama administration announcement of new fuel efficiency standards that will increase fuel economy to the equivalent of 54.5 mpg for cars and light-duty trucks by Model Year 2025, Gloria Bergquist, vice president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers told ABC News.

At a campaign event in Ames, Iowa, President Obama heralded the new announcement, telling a crowd of students that "we developed new fuel standards, developed new fuel standards so that your car will get nearly 55 miles per gallon by the middle of the next decade. That's going to save you money at the pump. That will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a level roughly equivalent to a year's worth of emissions from all the cars in the world."

Environmental groups also cheered, with the Union of Concerned Scientists claiming that the standards will save consumers nearly $8,000 over the lifetime of the new 2025 vehicles, while reducing "global warming emissions by as much as 270 million metric tons in 2030-the equivalent of shutting down 65 coal-fired power plants for one year."

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers issued a statement expressing some support. Bergquist said that members of her association - which includes not just American auto manufacturers such as Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation but also importers such as BMW Group and Toyota - are happy for the singular standard issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

"For years one of our top priorities was to have a distinct national standard," as opposed to what the Alliance referred to in a statement as to the "conflicting requirements from several regulatory bodies raise costs, ultimately taking money out of consumers' pockets and hurting sales."

That said, Bergquist said, "these are really ambitious aggressive standards."

Fuel efficient vehicles are already available in many instances, she said. "Consumers need to buy them. If they don't we may well fall short" of the goals necessary for today's standards to actually be feasible.

In addition to consumers buying fuel efficient vehicles in greater numbers, she said, clean diesel needs to become more available - it's only in roughly half of U.S. service stations - as do charging stations. Half of new vehicles sold in Europe se clean diesel, she said, while in the U.S. that number is closer to two percent. Anecdotally, automakers are told by consumers that they would be more willing to buy clean diesel vehicles if the fuel were more widespread. "We see the same thing with electric vehicles," she said.

For that reason, the automakers say they're glad that the new rule includes an April 2018 "mid-term evaluation" where the government can thoroughly review marketplace conditions. "Our first choice is we want to sell them in high volumes," she said, "but if that doesn't happen for some reason we need to address that sooner rather than later so we can see what needs to be done to encourage consumers."

The biggest driver of consumer behavior when it comes to cars "ultimately goes to the question of 'What's the price of gasoline?'" she said. "In Europe, the price is eight dollars a gallon and consumers are driving different vehicles."

While noting that the financial industry underlines that past experience does not necessarily predict future success, Bergquist noted that hybrid vehicles have been on the market for approximately a decade, and today constitute only 2- 2.5% of vehicle sales in the U.S.

The new standards are "very, very challenging," she said, while underlining, "we understand the need for greater energy security."

Tourists disturbing dolphins' sleep

Tourists in Hawaii often jump on a chance to see spinner dolphins up close, kayaking and snorkeling in bays where the marine mammals swim. But human visitors might be depriving the dolphins of much-needed daytime rest.

Spinner dolphins, famous for their aerial acrobatics, spend their days sleeping in shallow, protected bays and their nights feeding in more open waters. Unfortunately, this schedule clashes with tourists' playtime, and researchers warn that daily harassment by humans during periods of rest could have lasting negative impacts.

"Sleep is essential for most animals," marine scientist David W. Johnston of Duke University said in a statement. "When deprived of their necessary 'zzzz's,' they gradually show a decreased ability to process information and remain attentive to environmental stimuli. In technical lingo, we call this a 'vigilance decrement.'"

Spinner dolphins that chronically lack sleep might seriously suffer in their ability to find food, avoid predators and communicate with other animals, the researchers said. In a paper published Monday in the journal PLoS ONE, Johnston and his colleagues at Duke and Stony Book University proposed special maps to help curb some negative effects of human activity, without taking away all tourist opportunities for up-close encounters. [ Sleep Tight! Snoozing Animals Gallery ]

Their mapping model takes into account key environmental factors that make a bay ideal for sleeping ? such as its depth, size and distance from foraging areas ? to identify the areas where human activities should be closely monitored. In a study of 99 bays along the western coastlines of the main Hawaiian islands, the researchers found that just 21 were suitable habitats for sleepy dolphins. With this information, the researchers said conservation efforts could be focused on specific areas, rather than limiting access to dolphins along entire coasts.

A Gem

?February 9, 2009

By Norma Lehmeierhartie

I first became acquainted with Cheryl when I worked at Wainwright House and took one of her classes there. The warmth and energy that she exuded as a teacher is found in her new book. The Art of Extreme Self-Care: Transform Your Life One Month at a Time, by Cheryl Richardson is a short book?just over 100 pages?but it is just packed with great information. Just as she has de-cluttered her home, Richardson has presented a thoughtful book without any fluff, just substance.

In 1994, Richardson saw a coach, Thomas Leonard, who introduced her to the concept of Extreme Self-Care. Extreme self-care is for women like Richardson once was; women who took on the role of caretaker to their detriment. She writes: ?I was a good girl, and it was sucking the life out of me.?

The following are some of the concepts of Extreme Self-Care:

* Surround yourself with people who give and take
* Eliminate clutter
* Create a soul-nourishing work and home environment
* Get finances in order
* Don?t make commitments based on guilt or obligation
* Make pleasure a priority

There are 12 chapters and Richardson encourages the reader to tackle one chapter a month.

Each chapter is filled with her personal stories. It is obvious Richardson has worked through each chapter herself. She even presents her own list of things she will never do, for example.

She wrote about her experience on Oprah with Louise Hay and others on the subject of the Law of Attraction. Hay recommended looking in the mirror and saying ?I love you? to yourself every day. Richardson liked the advice and writes about her experience doing that in the book.

As an interior designer who knows how important the environment is on the well-being of the occupants, I really enjoyed her chapter on this subject. She writes about creating a soul-loving space: ?The power of being in a space that feels fully aligned with our soul is sorely underrated.? Amen!

Richardson spends most of the chapter discussing how to get rid of clutter?even going as far as saying remove 50% of it. She suggests de-cluttering one often-used room first to experience the difference it makes on how you feel. Excellent advice.

Each chapter concludes with resources for further reading, all good choices.

Highly inspirational guide to self-care

?December 14, 2008

By Kara D. Lane "Author, Wake Up to Powerful Living"

Cheryl Richardson has written a beautiful and uplifting book on the power of self-care. Not only do her words inspire, but so do the wonderful pictures of the ocean throughout the book.

Some people may think ?extreme self-care? sounds like a selfish concept; but as Cheryl explains, when we learn to care for ourselves deeply, we naturally begin to care for others in a healthier and more effective way. In fact, if we always put others first out of guilt or obligation, it can lead to resentment which doesn?t benefit us or those we love.

Throughout the book, she shows us through personal stories what obstacles stand in the way of self-care. For instance, she notes she used to be an ?automatic yes machine? when people asked for help because she wanted people to like her and she didn?t want anyone to disapprove of her. She learned the hard way why that doesn?t work and offers tips on how to respond to requests for help through a 3-step process of (1) buying some time, (2) doing a gut check, and (3) telling the truth directly with grace and love if it is necessary to say no.

This is a short and wonderful book that provides 12 ways to practice self-care, gives examples of each, issues a 30-day challenge for each principle and offers additional resources at the end of each chapter. It would make a great gift for yourself or someone you love.

Extremely Divine

?December 8, 2008

By Dave Carpenter "Peak Performance Scholar"

Cheryl Richardson and her publisher, Hay House, have created a beautiful book, filled with exceptional wisdom, and perfectly timed.

Because I had listened to the audio summary which was released before the book, I knew I would love Cheryl Richardson?s latest book. I had so thoroughly enjoyed the audio CD set (see my separate review). But, my high expectations were surpassed when the book arrived and I experienced the physical beauty of this book. This book has the look of a coffee table style book with wisdom that exceeds the norm for such books. As such, this will make a wonderful holiday gift (and a bargain at that).

Far more important than the beautiful packaging is Cheryl?s wonderful message that is perfectly timed to arrive at a moment when so many people are stressed by the economic meltdown and all of its consequences. I can?t imagine a more thoughtful antidote to these tough times.

Cheryl has skillfully woven twelve elements into a divinely inspired mosaic of the notion of extreme self-care. She appropriately credits Thomas Leonard, who many consider the father of the coaching profession as we know it today, with introducing her to the concept of extreme self-care. She then introduces us to her own twelve elements, comprising extreme self-care, so as to create the potential for a yearlong program of self-improvement (for those who want to implement one improvement per month).

This book is typical of the excellence with which Cheryl creates new material. The concepts are practical, well explained, and delightfully supported by a story from Cheryl?s own life to illustrate the concept. As I said in reviewing her last book, Cheryl has moved from being a traditional teacher to a wonderful conversationalist who teaches by openly sharing experiences from her own life. So many self-help authors use stories involving others to make their points. Not so with Cheryl! It?s as if she opened up her home and invited you to watch as she (occasionally) bumps through life. Her gracious humanity is one of her many personal strengths.

So many of her stories brought a smile to my heart, as I pictured Cheryl having the experience and as I related to my own experiences with some of the very same bumps of life. ?Hands off the Wheel? brought me back to the time when my business experienced significant growth when I finally let go of controlling every decision of my colleagues. Other sections, e.g., ?The Absolute No List,? provide me with opportunities for new personal performance gains as they are lessons I have yet to master.

Cheryl?s timing in releasing this material (the book and the audio) is so perfect. I believe we are headed for some very challenging times?times where self-care will be especially critical for all. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful guide, for such an important activity, during such turbulent times.

PS I am confident that this book, like Cheryl?s previous, will quickly become a well deserved best seller. I know that Cheryl?s many female fans will treasure her best book yet. My one hope for the book, and for humanity, is that an equal number of males will open up their minds and hearts to Cheryl?s profound wisdom. Judging by what I have observed by attending some of Cheryl?s seminars, our male specie has been relatively slow in catching on to how much her wisdom could help. Hope springs eternal that this too will change.

Timely Advice for How to Get Your Life Back in Control and in Perspective

?February 21, 2009

By Donald Mitchell "Jesus Loves You!"

If you are ready to lighten up and enjoy life, this is the book for you!

Did you know that you don?t have to suffer daily just because the economy is bad, your promotion prospects are bleak, and the television keeps reporting exceptionally discouraging news? Cheryl Richardson has the right view . . . that life can be a pleasure and from that pleasure you can bring much happiness to others.

She realizes that you probably have lots of bad habits that make you miserable and suggests one change a month that cumulatively build to create the kind of enjoyable life that may exceed your wildest hopes. The changes are couched in gentle, friendly terms and illustrated with breath-taking photos.

Ms. Richardson describes how hiring a personal coach changed her life and taught her the lessons in this book. If you just follow this advice, it?s like saving hundreds of dollars to get valuable secrets.

In the first month, you identify where you are deprived (such as in sleep, emotional support, personal time, energy, companionship, peacefulness, hope, and physical closeness) and start eliminating those deprivations that are most important to you.

In the second month, you begin to approve of yourself more through a series of mirror exercises where you tell yourself, ?I love you.?

In month three, you learn how to say ?no? and do it nicely.

In month four, you re-schedule your life to feel more comfortable and do important activities that make you feel great at the optimal times.

In month five, you offload a lot of what keeps you overly busy, annoyed, and stressed by ?letting go.?

In month six, you decide what you will never do again . . . all of those things that make life a drudge and an annoyance. You then work on remembering to stop doing those things.

In month seven, you change where you live and work to nurture rather than annoy you.

In the eighth month, you learn to insulate yourself from things that stress you out and serve no purpose (such as watching the latest violence on the television news).

In the ninth month, you begin to pay more attention to your health and body.

In the tenth month, you work on letting anger go.

In the eleventh month, you identify and begin to spend time on something that you are passionate about.

During the last month, you develop a plan for dealing with unexpected problems and emotional blows.

Each chapter is filled with lists of books and other resources you can use to flesh out the simple concepts that the book presents.

I read this book while on a long plane flight and found myself enjoying the trip simply due to taking Ms. Richardson?s approach to how I thought about and treated the experience. Instead of being a bore, I had fun!

Right When I Needed It

?February 9, 2009

By Dene Brock "Source of Good Stuff / Country Co?

Many of the books and resources that I review at my website seem to come to me in a moment of need. Finding myself tired and emotionally drained from the many demands that I faced in my day-to-day life, I knew that something had to change.

I did not go looking for a resource, but instead it came to me as an email from Hay House announcing a new book by Cheryl Richardson, a four-time New York Times best-selling author of self-improvement products.

Her newest release entitled The Art of Extreme Self-Care, offers excellent advice to bring you back into alignment with what?s truly important and what is merely a distraction.

This book offers 12 strategies designed to transform your life one month at a time. Each chapter challenges the reader to think differently and alter one behavior at a time that keeps infringing on your ability to provide self-care.

Cheryl Richardson assures the reader that practicing extreme self-care does not lead to becoming selfish or self-centered. She presents these important points that I found to be challenging, yet brilliant:

You can?t live an authentic, soul-directed life without disappointing people, hurting their feelings, or making them angry. That?s the truth.
You deserve to ask for and receive the support you need?but first, you must resign as General Manager of the Universe.

It?s time to stop swallowing your anger and instead, step up and take a stand for yourself in the face of inappropriate behavior.

In order to live a rich and meaningful life you?ll need to honor and protect your sensitivity. The days of ?sucking it up? or ?developing tough skin? are over.

I personally love the extra resources that the author includes at the end of each chapter such as additional reading, websites, audios, podcasts etc? that can be used to further build on what you have learned.

She is also providing classes at Hay House Radio that go hand-in-hand with each chapter in the form of a study group. There are also additional offerings including an Extreme Self-Care Retreat Contest to be held at Borrego Ranch Resort and Spa in Borrego Springs, CA.

I consider this a must-have book for anyone who is feeling weary, over-worked, under-appreciated and stressed. It?s time to find balance within your desires to help others and take care of yourself, and Cheryl has definitely covered all the bases in this book.

Self-Help/Improve Your Inner Self

?January 2, 2010

By Kathy W

Excellent book for doing inner-transforming work!

This 2009, 111-page book (I love the number) also includes a 7 page intro and 4 blank pages for writing personal notes to yourself. It includes 12 strategies for life transformation and personal stories of the realization and practice of ?Extreme Self-Care?. The 12 concepts, and their supporting steps, are written in simple, easy-to-understand language. The chapters are infused with peaceful beach and ocean pictures. The book provides the tools you need to self-improve the ?issues? you can admit to yourself that you have.

Cheryl Richardson begins by telling us how hiring a personal coach led her to the realization that although she THOUGHT she was doing things right, she realized that she was taking care of others first and putting herself last. We seem to believe, and have been taught, that putting ourselves first is ?selfish?. (I know I heard it all my life?everywhere. I think you were supposed to be a martyr and suffer more to be closer to Heaven or something like that.) Cheryl explains this concept in greater detail and how caring for yourself first actually allows you to give more of yourself to others.

The book is designed to help you learn the concepts through small steps, with guidelines and suggestions to help you practice so you can make permanent, meaningful changes in your life. Cheryl suggests that you begin by picking any of the 12 chapters (one per concept) and work on that one. You could devote one month to each chapter. She also suggests you might like to begin with the chapter that you would most like to AVOID. (Interesting!) The book is loaded with support and informational websites that you can connect to for more info.

So, feeling pretty confident, I skimmed the index and selected Chapter 5 ?Take Your Hands Off the Wheel?. (I have been working on the concept of ?surrender? and that title sounded like a match.) I didn?t get far into the 9-page chapter when I got my ego slapped a bit. Reading through, I realized that I try to do everything myself sometimes because I don?t want to feel indebted to others. That was an old habit or learned behavior that jumped back up and bit me in the tail. For many years, I had problems accepting things from others for the same reason. Not only that, but it was a CONTROL issue. (I thought I had resolved CONTROL!) So, I had a very humbling AHA moment and quickly found another aspect of control that I need to work on. Obviously, this is not the only area I need to work on either, but as you can see, the book quickly validated its importance.

The 12 chapters/concepts/strategies are:
1) End the Legacy of Deprivation
2) Mirror, Mirror On The Wall
3) Let Me Dissapoint You
4) The Power of Rhythm and Routine
5) Take Your Hands Off The Wheel
6) The Absolute No List
7) Soul-loving Space
8) You?re So Sensitive
9) Tune Up Time
10) Does That Anger Taste Good
11) Wake Up!
12) Your Extreme Self-Care First-Aid Kit

This is my first experience with Hay House author Cheryl Richardson. Other great Hay House authors that I have found include Louise Hay, Doreen Virtue, and Wayne Dyer.

Extreme Self Care Nourishes You and Promotes Creativity

?January 8, 2009

By J. Whitford

I remember seeing Cheryl Richardson on Oprah over a decade ago telling women in the audience that they needed to put themselves first ? make time for themselves before their family and their jobs. The audience literally attacked her, saying their families came first, their jobs second, and to do otherwise was just plain wrong.

A decade later, we all realize that Cheryl was just ahead of her time. She knew years ago that if you put yourself first emotionally, mentally and spiritually every day, then you would not only be in great health ? but you would genuinely have something to give back to the people that surround you.

A person who has taken time (even as little as an hour a day) to listen to music they love, write in a journal, read an article or book that nourishes them, or talk a soulful walk ? will find themselves not only more giving and loving, but much more creative in their personal and professional lives.

Cheryl?s latest book gives you one task to do each month and resources to read or discover with each task. Her previous book Life Makeovers gave you one task a week. Knowing how frazzled we have become over the past decade; Cheryl wisely gives us thirty days to create a new soul nourishing habit each month.

I highly recommend all of her books and CDs but suggest if you never take time for yourself ? start with this one. You will find yourself slowing down to connect with your soul, and feeling more energized and whole when you do.

How NoSQL Relates to the Energy Business | Tek-Tips Whitepaper ...

Recently, I watched the Soft Grid conference, put out by GreentechMedia via Ustream, and was pleasantly surprised that many smart grid and utilities people talked about Big Data and cloud computing. Then I went to the 2012 NoSQL Now conference, where I interviewed five companies and sat in on several of the sessions there. I will post a blog for each interview later. For now, let me describe my understanding of what NoSQL is and how it may be applied to the energy business.

I consulted for MySQL before and knew something about the relational database market. But after it was bought by Sun, I stopped following it. I knew there was such a thing as NoSQL but initially thought it was ?No to SQL?; it is more like ?Not only SQL.? NoSQL started to get attention circa 2009, and the NoSQL Now conference was only started in 2011. So it is a relatively new area and, as in any new area, the market is very confused. Many terminologies and acronyms are floating around, with many claims by vendors. Quite frankly, it is very, very hard to walk through this market without getting totally confused. Prior to attending the conference, I studied the companies I planned to interview and read anything and everything I could put my eyes on. The sad reality was that I was further confused.

What is NoSQL, technology-wise, component-wise, and application-wise?

Technology-wise

The NoSQL market can be described in a few ways. One way is to categorize it by the technologies used. The 451 Group?s Matt Asllet, in his blog NoSQL, NewSQL and Beyond: The answer to SPRAINed relational databases, gave a pretty good picture of the market, with categories and the vendors who belong to each category.

This figure alone is very valuable. This figure helped me to understand where my interviewees? companies fall in.

This view is great, but I was still not comfortable enough to say, ?Yes, I got it.? Bob Wiederhold, president and CEO of Couchbase, made it much simpler for me.

He thinks NoSQL is playing in a segment that is not concentrated on by NoSQL players that are good at transactions or suitable for backoffice applications. He further classified NoSQL into four categories:

  • Key value
  • Document
  • Column family
  • Graph

The current Couchbase (1.8) belongs to the key-value camp but will move to the document camp at its 2.0 version launch. He also told me that the key-value and document camps are being merged and the combined camp will be the biggest of the three new categories. I plan to write about his interview in a future blog.

How they fit together in the enterprise

How do NoSQL technologies fit into the enterprise? William McKnight, of McKnight Consulting Group, presented a keynote speech titled, ?Putting NoSQL in its Place?in the Enterprise.?

One of his slides shows really well how data is collected, aggregated, and analyzed in the enterprise, and which components are there for each function. Data are collected for analysis; otherwise, there is no reason to collect them. There are two major groups for analysis: real time (streaming) and static (stored data). In his slide, Hadoop (which processes data in batch mode) is placed on the analytic side. But if you need to analyze a massive amount of data as it comes in real time, you need streaming analysis. Hadoop is not meant for that. That is why we need databases that can handle real-time streaming data, which is in a totally different area from that of Hadoop.

Application Areas

This is great. Then, what about application areas? Where does each NoSQL technology apply? Scott Jarr, cofounder and chief strategy officer at VoltDB, gave me the following figure.

Actually, he drew this on a piece of paper but he had a published blog. I will cover it in more detail in a future blog. He looked at the five areas of applications: interactive, real-time analytics, record lookup, historical analysis, and exploratory. He then placed each Big Data technology in one of the five areas. This is a pretty good explanation of NoSQL in terms of application areas. In the figure, VoltDB is colored differently from NewSQL, but he classified it in the NewSQL camp.

Applications to Energy (Smart Grid)

The applications areas discussed most throughout the conference were publication, financial, and SNS. A couple of people said that SNS is a driving force for Big Data and NoSQL on the West Coast, but on the East Coast it is primarily financial communities. What about its application to smart grid? In the Soft Grid conference, focus was on metered data, which will be collected, aggregated, and stored in real time but analyzed in no real-time fashion. I heard during the Soft Grid conference that some utilities were using Hadoop to analyze their metered data.

The Northeast blackout of 2003 was caused because timely actions were not taken to isolate the problem area from the rest of the power grid, and faults cascaded to the entire area. The causes of the blackout were studied intensely. But in 2011, it was repeated in the San Diego area. The initial cause may be different from the one in 2003, but the impact cascaded in the same way as in 2003. With the more connected ICT technologies, modern monitoring systems like SCADA, and real-time analytics of power grid health, this could be avoided. The decision to cut off faulty areas from the grid requires real-time action by monitored data coming in in real time because power moves very quickly. This is an application area that is different from the trend analysis done with Hadoop.

Those companies I interviewed told me the application to smart grid may be an interesting idea, but it is still premature, as they do not see the market forming. Finally, I just want to mention that David Brown of EMC, a parent company of VMware, used GemFire to implement data collection and analytics for some unnamed utilities. His case was an exception, and I guess the market is still being formed for the utilities.

Lawyer appeals Pussy Riot members jail sentences

MOSCOW (AP) ? Three members of the Pussy Riot punk band have appealed a court's decision to jail them for two years for their "punk prayer" against Russian leader Vladimir Putin in a Moscow cathedral, their lawyer said Monday.

The stunt angered Russia's dominant Orthodox Church, but the women's trial and punishment also upset human rights activists and others who accused the Kremlin and the Church of orchestrating the trial amid a crackdown on Putin's critics.

Protests supporting the women have been held in many countries, and celebrities such as Paul McCartney have called for their release.

The women were arrested and put on trial after their unauthorized performance at Moscow's Christ the Savior cathedral in February, during which they called on the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from Putin. The Russian leader faces growing opposition, and he has increasingly cracked down on critics since returning to the presidency in May.

The women were sentenced on Aug. 17, and their lawyer Violetta Volkova said the appeal was submitted to the Khamovniki district court on Monday. A decision is expected within 10 days. Meanwhile, the band has said that at least two of its members have fled Russia to avoid arrest.

Also Monday, Orthodox Church leaders condemned the chopping down of wooden crosses in Russia and neighboring Ukraine by people claiming to support Pussy Riot.

In mid-August, the controversial Ukrainian group Femen, whose topless members stage pranks to support women's rights, cut down a massive Orthodox cross in Kiev to protest the band members' conviction. Four more crosses were cut down in the northern Russian region of Archangelsk and the Urals region of Chelyabinsk over the weekend.

Church spokesman Vladimir Legoida said that the vandals "taunt" Russian culture and history.

Pussy Riot manager Pyotr Verzilov said last week that the band disapproved of damaging crosses.

Israeli police arrest suspects in firebomb attack

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli police say they have arrested three Jewish youths from a West Bank settlement as suspects in firebomb attack that wounded six Palestinians in a taxi.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Sunday the three suspects were minors, aged 12-13. They will appear in a Jerusalem court to face charges.

The attack 10 days ago targeted a taxi driving in the West Bank. A firebomb struck the vehicle, injuring the six people inside, one seriously. The military suspected Jewish extremists.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders condemned the firebombing.

Extremist Israeli settlers often attack Palestinians and their property as part of a campaign they call the "price tag," retaliation for either army action against settlers or Palestinian attacks.

Kingston Real Estate, Moving, Relocation ? Picking the Right ...

Kingston Real Estate, Moving, Relocation ? Picking the Right Movers

So you have decided to move ? now the fun begins of having your personal belongings all relocated to your new home.? With a vast number of options to pick from from doing it yourself to hiring the pros, here are some tips to assist you:
? Ask for recommendations from friends other professionals in the local real estate industry.
? Beware of fly-by-night operations. They may seem like a bargain, but you get what you pay for.
? Does the company provide you with a written estimate and contract? (Beware of movers that just give you a price over the phone.)
